Sand Fly in Five-Length ThistleDown Upset Tally Race Is Sponsored by Cleveland Debutantes; Montaera Shows Way By J. R. BATTY THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 15. — Turning.on a burst of speed that carried him from sixth position to first in a short distance on the turn, Sand Fly romped to a five-length victory in the sixth race here today in which a bevy of Cleveland beauties sponsored contestants in the race. Owned and trained by Francis Calvo and sponsored in the dash by the Cleveland debutantes, Eleanor Taft, Marianna Maskey and Helen Bodurtha, Sand Fly earned the top share of a ,600 purse by coming to the end of six furlongs with a hand full of lengths to spare over Al Well-mans Jolisam. A pair of lengths farther back, John Warrens Safari Boy gained the show award. With an estimated throng of 6,200 looking on, Sand Fly handled the heavy going, with comparative ease as he bounded over! the distance in 1:18. Apprentice Woody Slinker handled the reins and the winner, a six-year-old geldeti son of Errard— Cotton Candy, paid 8.40 after registering a surprise, but convincing, triumph over this group. Montaera, with Jockey Larry Grubb scrubbing until the end, crossed the wire slightly better than two lengths before Suits NPants as the third of the Northern Ohio Series was decided. Show Money from the ,200 purse award went to Daddys Punkin. Who was another six lengths back while Crosslock was fourth. Court Shannon, topweighted under 115 pounds and the public choice, stumbled and fell a stride after the start. Horse and rider, Alfred Tryon, escaped injury. Montaera was clocked the distance in 2:09 and the route specialist, who last year won eighth purses, rewarded backers 0.40. It sure was something when a horse by the name of Something won the fourth race and became the fourth straight victor possessing program number five. Stimulant broke from the five stall position to capture the third race. Gold Standard, winner of the first race, and Tourlanx, who took the second dash, also raced carrying a number five saddle cloth. Owned by Hickory Lane Farm, Something, a gray four-year-old daughter of Gino Beau — Lark, accounted for the fourth race by downing Joyces Gem with a length and a half to spare. Nina Pal was third among the seven who competed at six furlongs. Something had the riding services of Ray Correa and paid .20. From the barn of Jack L. McKnight, Stimulant, a two-year-old gelded product of Double Scotch — Money Talks, took the third race at the direct expense of the favorite, Mr. Weeper while Silk Trip ended up third after breaking tardily. Stimulant was capably ridden by Joe LiCausi, and went five furlongs in 1:066 after which an 1.00 pay-off was posted. Maiden three- and four-year-olds made up the field in the first race. Nine horses competed and best of the lot was Gold Standard, who upset the odds-on. favorite . s by a length and a half. Errards Boy was third some nine more lengths farther back. Gold Standard, owned by the combined interests of Reneau and Zepht, returned 0.60 after Ralph Borgemenke guided him over five and a half furlongs in 1:12%. Tourlanx won the second race, defeating seven other claiming sprinters of the ,000 variety. Owned by Mrs. J. Timon, Tourlanx scored handily by two and a hali lengths over Milan Man, while Pantata wat third. Albert Widman piloted the winner who paid .20 as- favorite and requirec 1:19% to go six furlongs.
