Shipboard Heads Field of Eight Vying In Aqueducts Hitchcock Steeplechase Montpelier Fencer to Have * Beaupre as Running Mate; Coveted Looms Main Threat AQUEDUCT, L. I., TT. YM June 15.— For the second time this week, a steeplechase occupies the spotlight at Aqueduct Thurs day. The event is the 0,000 added Hitchcock at about two miles, which has attracted a field of eight headed by Mont-peliers Shipboard. The steeplechase champion pro tern has been asked to carry a cumbersome 163 pounds, seven more than he had up when winning the Meadow Brook Chase at Belmont Park on June 2. Though that race was at two and a half miles and the best previous race by the son of Battleship was his triumph in the Grand National at three miles, he has the speed to triumph at tomorrows rather short two miles. Albert Foot, as usual, will be in the saddle. Shipboard will be coupled with Manton B. Metcalf, Jrs. Beaupre, who is considerably better than an empty stall and gets in with 145 pounds. As Albert Foot has been named for both horses, it is possible that only one will start. In his last outing, Beaupre was a remote fourth in the Meadow Brook, while before that he finished only three lengths behind Shipboard in the Corinthian, in front of such good ones as Neji and Lawrence R. Troianos Curly Joe. Curly Joe, who is in with 134 pounds, including Charley Harr, finished six lengths behind Shipboard in second place in the Meadow Brook and has a seven-pound shift in his favor. He will be coupled with Mrs. Hickey Walshs Rythminhim, who comes from a good second to Par Amour over hurdles. Pat Smithwick is slated to ride at 142 pounds. Lazy F. Ranchs Coveted looms a formidable factor here under 148 pounds. Last year, coveted ran many good races behind such stars as Shipboard, King Commander and Neji under light weights, but gave the impression that he has im-, -proved when he finished a close second to his running-mate Montadet under 157 for his first start of the year on June 6. Normal improvement would make him extremely dangerous. No rider has been named for Coveted, but he will probably have the services of either Scotty Schul-hofer or the promising apprentice, J. Willard Thompson. The field is completed by Sanford Stud Farms Fulton, in with a feathery 132 pounds; James F. McHughs Jam, 143, and Mrs. C. E. Adams Conflict, 130 pounds. Fulton was beaten only a head by Coveted when receiving 20 pounds in their seasonal bow, but gets only 16 tomorrow. Jam is an incorrigibly reckless jumper and Earl Phelps again has the unenviable task of trying to get him over the course safely. Conflict has not been seen in action in a couple of years. Scott Riles will be in the saddle. No rider has been named for Fulton, but Jason Eaby is his regular pilot. The best of tomorrows flat races is the Howard Beach Handicap, a classified event for fillies and mares at a mile and a sixteenth with a ,500 purse. Seven have been named for this test, including Mrs. B. F. Whitakers one-time champion, Grecian Queen. Though the daughter of Heliopolis has been unable to win in a couple of years, she need be only a shadow of her former self to handle such mediocrities as Winning Stride, Hula Hula, Roman Warbler, Royca, Old Baasket and Ming Yellow. The latter mare, who races for C. V., Whitney, comes from a dull effort, but gives the impression of being eligible to improve sharply. MERVYN LeROY — President of HoiJy-veood Turf Club who proposes a series of three match races between Nashua and Swaps, with a 00/000 purse for each.
