Contest for Press Box Handicappers - As an added incentive to select winners, the management announced a gift certificate, of a nominal value, will be given each week at the meeting to the handicapper picking the most winners for said six-day period. Competition is between five selectors, including this correspondent and Arnie Shields, doing handicap at ThistleDown for this publication. The first weeks prize went to a Cleveland newspaper horse picker. However a nasty rumor is circulating the premises that his photo finish victory was due to nepotism his son is keeping score. . . . Another trophy to be awarded is a pair of binoculars, of the type obtainable from a Coney Island claw machine, this going to the longest-priced winner selected. Handicap is resting comfortably in this department, having had on top Hel-forhay, who paid 2.20 on Monday. . . . Apprentice Vidol Gruajardo donned silks for the first time when he rode Gray Gown in the second race on- Monday. Born on a ranch 21 years ago near Corpus Christi, Texas, -he almost scored with Gray Gown, missing by a head to Nother Speech after breaking a trifle tardy. The lad is under contract to Monte Preston, who has a formidable string locally. Preston reports he has been under his tutelage for four years and has appeared in some quarter horse races in Texas. Gruajardo is married and has a "muchacho."
