ThistleDown By J. R. Batty 1 Imp Stakes Honors Great Ohio-Bred OKeeffe Takes Oyer Steward Post Stabling Agreement of Two Tracks THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 15.— Naming of the ,000 Imp Stakes, a six-furlong test for fillies and mares, three-year-olds and upward, which will feature this Saturdays nine-race program is interesting. Imp was recently voted one of the 10 best all-time race mares in the poll conducted by Delaware Park. What many people, including local racing fans do not realize is that Imp is an Ohio-bred. The "coal black mare" was certainly the greatest race mare ever produced in this state and was equal to the task of beating the best in New York while carrvinc ton weiehts half a century ago. She raced in the colors of her breeder D. R. Harness of Chillicothe, Ohio. Imp was the first mare to win the famous Suburban Handicap. J. Fred Colwill left here recently and will be gone for two weeks. The Pimlico racing secretary and. ThistleDown steward will not be vacationing however but will be active as racing secretary at the 10-day Cumberland, Md„ meeting. In his absence, John OKeefe will temporarily desert his duties as publicist and serve as the third steward along with Wilmer Brinton and William Almy, Jr. This move will place three ex-state stewards in the ThistleDown stand. Brinton was formerly state representative in both Maryland and West Virginia; Almy served a term as state steward in Massachusetts, and OKeeffe once held a similar position at all of the meetings in the Providence of Quebec, Canada.
