Reflections 5 By Nelson Dunstan • Nashua-Swaps Match Causes Some Feeling Belair Owner Is Not Curt, Ungracious Proposed Match Natural for Chicago Area NEW YORK, N. Y., June 15.— In our 20 years of writing news of the turf, we have never been so surprised as when Mervyn LeRoy of Hollywood Park made the statement which appeared in this paper and in which he charged William Woodward, Jr., with being "curt and ungracious" when he declined to ship Nashua to Hollywood to meet Swaps in a match race. There must -be some misunderstanding, for LeRoy has always impressed us as a very fine gentleman and we can say the same for Woodward, who, in our opinion, would have been foolish to send his horse 3.000 miles to meet a great champion who defeated him in the Kentucky Derby and won the Californian against Determine in world record time. When all is said and done, Ben Lindheimer, executive director of Arlington and Washington Parks in Chicago, was the first to make a bid -for a meeting between these two horses and we would like to give the background for this bid of 5,-000. Why the Hollywood Park officials, especially Al Wesson, should beef and personally attack young Woodward is beyond us. Woodward is carrying on the traditions of his late father, who was one of the greatest men who ever was identified with American racing.
