Chain of Distaff Stakes Winners When Westward Ho captured the recent Kent Stakes at Delaware, he became the sixth stakes winner bred by his owner, Breckenridge Long, as a result of a purchase made 30 years ago at the dispersal of Major August Belmonts Nursery Stud here. At that sale, Long bought La Chananeenne with her filly foal by Hourless for ,600. The foal was Tinita. She became a stakes winner and is the third dam of Westward Ho. The latters dam, Loraine, and his grandam, Nasca, also won stakes. In addition, Nasca also produced the stakes winner Big If, and Tinitas half sister, Shanette, produced Equipet. Some mares seem to have a faculty for producing sons who become successful sires. Plucky Liege had Sir Gallahad m, Bull Dog, Admiral Drake and several others; Selene had Hyperion, Sickle and Pharamond n. An American mare which must be placed in this category is Quickly. She had only three sons and all are successful sires — Count Fleet, Depth Charge and Count Speed. Last week, as an example, Depth Charge-sired Dark Charger accounted for the Polly Drummond Stakes on the East Coast, and the following day at Hollywood Park, Mobile, a son of Count Speed, turned in one of the most impressive two-year-old performances there this year in capturing a division of the June Juvenile Stakes. The syndicate-owned Royal Gem II, sire of Kentucky Derby winner. Dark Star, will have the biggest representation in next months Keeneland Summer Sales. There will be eight sons and five daughters of the Australian import in the catalog, including a full brother of Dark Star consigned by Warner L. Jones, Jr. The popular Alibhai has the next largest number, 11, including five colts. Polynesian, War Admiral and War Relic each will have nine offspring offered.
