, Helioscope to Be Starter Next Wednesday in Sal vat or Mile To Be In Nature of Prep i For Helis Runners More Important Races in July By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport; N. J., June 15. — William G. Helis, Jr.s Helioscope, who was not expected to be seen in competition until early in July, will be a starter in the 5,000 added Salvator Mile that will be run here next Wednesday. The surprise announcement was made by Maurice "Jock" Barshak who privately revealed the stable plans to this publication this morning after conferring, by phone with Helis in New Orleans. According to Barshak, "the Salvator will be in the nature of a prep for Helioscope for his more important engagements in July." He declined to make a commitment on what his next start after the Salvator will be, but indicated that Helis and he are considering most seriously the seven-furlong Carter and. mile and a quarter Brooklyn handicaps, to be run at Aqueduct on July 4 and July 9, respectively, and the Michigan Mile that will be run at Detroit on July 9. Naturally the long striding son of Heliopolis will not be able to compete in all three and a final decision will have to be made. All three races are worth 0,000 added, but the first two are handicaps and the Michigan Mile is an allowance event in which top weight is scale weight of 126 pounds. Sparkling Seven Furlongs Trial Most important in the immediate decision to run in the Salvator was the obvious excellent condition shown by the four-, year-old colt in a seven-furlong workout over the track this morning. Sam Boul-metis rated the big bay "along in long sweeping strides and he smartly moved along the first quarter in :23%, the three -eighths in :35, half mile in :46%, five-eighths in : 5 9%, six furlongs in 1:11% and the seven-eighths in 1:24%, after which he was eased up to the mile. Trainer Howard Hausner and Barshak, who witnessed the trial, were both obviously pleased. The Salvator is an allowance race and Helioscope will carry a high weight of 126 pounds, which is two less than he shouldered in his stirring triumph over High Gun in the recent Suburban. Helioscope has won four of his five starts this year, established three track records and equalled the modern mile and a quarter Belmont mark of Tom Fools in winning the Suburban. The appearance of Helioscope in the Salvator will be an unexpected pleasure in this area as he wasnt expected to see action until at least the 5,000 added Monmouth Handicap on July 23, but it spells bad news to the many horsemen who have been" pointing their charges for the Salvator. It would appear that Helioscope is an absolute standout for anything he will meet in the Salvator. The only latent threat at the moment seems to be Maine Chance Farms Jet Action, who had a chance to qualify himself by winning a six-furlong prep on todays program.
