4 France Herbager Impresses in HocquartWin; May Be Europes Top Three-Year-Old By PRINCE VLADIMIR WIAZEMSKI Our Paris Correspondent PARIS. Madame Cine del Ducas Herbager stamped himself as the finest three-year-old in France and, perhaps, in all Europe, by overwhelming Prince Aly Khans Princellon and eight others in the 5,000 Prix Hocquart Sunday at Longchamp. The son of Vandale Flagette ran the 1V2 miles in 2:33 with a minimum of effort and held a two and one- half length advantage over Princillon at the wire. Herbager is now two-for-two this sea- son, having won the j Prix Gref fulhe in his first outing. The feeling here is that Ma-1 dame del Duca needs only to send her colt across the channel and . victory in the Epsom Derby would be hers. However, she has decided to pass up the Epsom classic in favor of the French Derby Prix du Jockey Club here June 14r then concentrate on one of Englands most coveted prizes the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. It has been quite some time since France has boasted as promising a three-year-old as Herbager. Nothing Left for Stretch Run The 9,992 Prix du Cadran, co-feature Sunday at Longchamp, was accorded extra importance due to the appearance of John McShains Gladness. The Irish-bred maie, a superb performer against colts last season in winning the Ascot and Goodwood Cups, was aligned against the finest four-and five-year-old stayers in France, and had nothing left for the stretch run after leading at the final bend. The early pace was slow and Gladness jockey, Lester Piggott, lost little time in taking his mount to the fore. The mare tired badly, however, and was not able-to repulse the first charge by those coming from slightly off the pace. Wallaby, the 3-to-2 choice, was the first to pass Gladness, and he appeared headed for an easy victory at the furlong pole, only to hang in the final yards and be overtaken by Madame Suzy Volterras Tello, an 8-to-l shot. Maxime Garcia took Tello to the outside for the stretch drive and was taking dead aim on the leader throughout the final sixteenth. Earlier in the week at Longchamp Gilbert Chemouls Argel and two of Jean Sterns most consistent performers, Lo-thaire and Franc Luron, registered convincing triumphs. Argel, the 5-to-4 favorite, carried top weight of 133 pounds in flawless style in outclassing his opponents in the Handicap Prix de Monfort, at two miles. F. Schmidts Hope, of Joke, the light- i weight, was second, five lengths behind the winner. Argel, a four-year-old colt by Alizier Argyrophedrine, was purchased by Chemoul from the Rothschild stable earlier this year. Lothaire, at 5-to-2, captured the iena Purse over Topmost. The victor gave a fine performance in the 1 M miles race but the runner-up by Mat de Cocagne out of Hesitation, by Sultan Mahomed demonstrated good potential and may improve sharply off that effort. The 2,000 Prix dHarcourt, for four-year-olds and upward, attracted a good field, including George Wildensteins Balbo, who finished first in the Prix Ganay but was disqualified and placed second. Balbo again turned in a creditable performance, finishing third to Franc Luron and Male-faim. Franc Luron is by Free Man Fra-mee, by Vandale. Guy de Rothschilds smart sophomore, Shantung, displayed genuine class in earning a narrow decision at the expense of Mrs. J. B. Strassburgers Braemer in the Prix Edgar de la Charme at St. Cloud. The latter was clossing swiftly and may prefer a longer distance. The Charme was contested at Va miles. Maurice Hennessys three-year-old filly La Merienne, a daughter of the broodmare La Mirambule, who is now in the United States as the property of Howell Jackson, made her first appearance of the season in the Prix Cerdagne at Le Tremblay. Conceding five pounds, to most of her rivals, she came on strongly in the final furlong to gain a dead heat with E. de Vergies 16-to-1 outsider, Wild Martine. Marcel Bous-sacs Phigalia was third with-the favorite, Mrs. Strassburgers Kuwait, fifth. MAURICE HENNESSY His filly La Merienne closed in whirlwind fashion in her first outing of the seasbn to gain a - dead heat in the Prix Cerdagne at Le Tremblay.
