Eureka Belle Gets Up In Seven-Furlong-Dash Comes From Behind Under Fine Ride by D. L. Shirey By J. J. HAHN Staff Correspondent CAHOKIA DOWNS, East St. Louis, 111., May 14. Despite cold and windy weather and a threat of a tornado striking in this area, 3,180 brave souls turned out under the elements Wednesday night to witness a well-balanced program of nine races which was headed bythe Troy Purse, a 7 furlongs dash which was won by Matting-ley and Hardicks gray mare, Eureka Belle, under a splendid ride by D. L. Shirey, the four-year-old daughter of The Sultan came from behind a stiff pace over the "good" racing strip to defeat Carroll P. Polands Wild Chorus, R. B. Symonds Cool Customer and five others; including Will-pass, the public choice, Rozs Pride, Sabotage II., Chichon and Pont Royal. Wild Chorus who had the services of C. Wayne Beck in the saddle, was sent to the front at the start of the sprint and quickly opened daylight over -his opposition as Rozs Pride attempted to keep up. The ultimate winner, Eaureka Bell, under steady restraint by Shirey raced in third position. After half the journey, Rozs Pride was unable to move to the leader, even though Beck took back his mount on the far turn for a breathing spell. In the final stages, Rozs Pride moved to within a length of the leader, but the runner-up had enough and Rozs Pride dropped out of it steadily as Shirey sent his charge up orr the outside. Entering the stretch Wild Chorus began shortening stride and the gray filly went to the front and after opening a two lengths lead an eighth from the finish went under the wire a length and one-half in front. Wild Chorus who was coming on again, went lame in the race, but easily saved the place by half a dozen lengths from Cool Customer who garnered the minor award by a neck from Willpass. The latter had no excuses, racing on the ex-treme outside of the leaders all the way. Sabotage II., who was making his debut in in the country, was in tight quarters on the far turn and dropped out of it suddenly. He probably was knocked off stride and Rafael Sanabria his rider, could never get him back again. Raymond Landing and apprentice Cicilio Chavez, an importation from Cuba, were the riding stars, each driving home a pair of winners. The Hampton Park, a 5-furlong dash for three-year-olds and upwards is the main event tomorrow and 10 are entered in this dash, including many local favorites. Thel-ma M. Mitchells Somascope is the top weighted one at 119 pounds and is giving his opposition from five to 19 pounds. Expected to match strides with Somascope are Low Star, Saucey Aire, Trustful, Waco Girl, Red Thread, Little Hoss, Five Diamonds, She Gains, U. S. Weed and Juniors Dream. . Three distance races are carded and the longest is the ninth to be staged over the 1 miles distance.
