Basil Basil Bee Bee Wins Wins International International Chase; Chase; Irish Irish Whistler Whistler in in Lead Lead Throughout Throughout First Stakes Tally For Patrice Jacobs Independence Places Before Chambourg at Belmont Park As Shipboard Finishes Last By BOB HORWOOD BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 13. Giving his charming owner her first stakes victory, Miss Patrice Jacobs Basil Bee scored an easy triumph in todays 61st running of the 6,800 International Steeplechase Handicap. At the fin--ish of about 2 1-6 miles, Basil Bee was four and a half lengths before Mrs. Mickey Walshs Independence, who led Richard K. Mellons pacemaking Chambourg by a head. It was seven more lengths back to Whitewood Studs Arywa. Mrs. Marion duPont Scotts former champion, Shipboard, finished a distant last in the field of six, making several minor mistakes and appearing to sulk after the first mile. Bob McDonald rode a confident race on Basil Bee, who paid 2.50, though he had won his last five starts in 1958, and was timed in 4:06 on a soft track. Basil Bee is a gelded chestnut seven-year-old son of Basileus H. Lindie Be; by Omaha, who was given to Miss Jacobs on her 21st birthday, last April 22 and made his first start in her salmon pink and emerald green sliks on May 14, ex-jactly a year ago today. Basil Bee was unplaced in that race and failed to win for Miss Jacobs until October 2, when he won a hurdle race with a ,000 claiming tag. Has Our Dad in Preakness He could have been claimed for the same figure in his next winning race and had a ,100 tag when Tie won on October 21, but won a. handicap on October 15 and captured the Monmouth County Handicap at the Red Bank Hunts for his last start prior to today on October 25. Miss Jacobs is eligible to win a second stakes this week as she is also the proud owner of Our Dad, who has been training brilliantly for Saturdays Preakness at Pimlico. James Murphy sent Chambourg into wide lead soon after the start of the International, followed by Basil Bee, Independence, Arywa, Darubini and Shipboard Chambourg appeared to be going alon easily, six lengths in the van when he made a bad bobble at the ninth fence in the backstretch, causing Murphy to lose an iron. He recovered before he was passed by Basil Bee, but that mistake evidently took something out of the Rufigi gelding McDonald sent Basil Bee into command while rounding the turn to the stretch and took the final fence a length and a half before the tiring Chambourg, who was fol- -lowed by Independence. Arywa was still irjg fourth place, while Darubini and Shififl board continued to trail. George Lewis Jeffs Uh Oh was two lengths farther back after making a promising bid along the rail at the head of the stretch, while Fred J. Thompsons Sabotage came from far back to be a length and one-half out of the money. Laudy Lawrences Beau Diable and Mrs. H. C. Phipps Nasco attracted attend tion before this mile event, but finished seventh and ninth. Beau Diable plodded along on the outside all the way, while Nasco ran into difficulty when moving to the outside near the three-furlong pole. Rogelio Trejos rode Cannon Fire, who paid 0.20 and was teletimed in 1:36 on ok good track. a A scattered few received the largest Daily Double pay-off on a New York track since 1957 when John P. Carrolls Owendelle and John A. Morris Pepper returned 73.40. Raul Sterling and Bob Ussery piloted Owendelle and Pepper, who paid 4.60 and .9.40, respectively. Owendelle finished strongly to turn back Gulizar by two and a half lengths, with Royal Eighteen coming from far back to be less than a length farther back. Pepper also finished well to take the second race by a length and a half over Bireme, who saved second money by a nose over Successful. A crowd of 18,369 turned out in pleasant, though slightly chilly, weather. The main track was sloppy for the early races, but had dried to good by the seventh race. Arthur "Bull" Hancocks Monarchy, a sister to Round Table, scored her second victory in as many starts when she staved off the closing rush of Natalie R. Lynchs Roving Mary to win the Terminal Purse by a half length. Mrs. H. C. Phipps Stretch Drive was three lengths farther back after looming up strongly on the inside at the final bend, then proving not to have any stretch drive. Eddie Arcaro piloted the winning daughter of Princequillo Knights daughter, by Sir Cosmo, ,who paid .20 after stepping the 5 furlongs in :59.
