4 4 Shirley Jones Has Final Acorn Trial Covers Six Sloppy Furlongs In 1:15 Handily; Several Other Stakes Hopefuls Drill By COSTY CARAS Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 14. Brae Burn Farms Shirley Jones worked three-quarters of a mile in 1:15 handily over the Jamaica sloppy track this morning in preparation for Saturdays Acorn Stakes. Going evenly throughout the test, the Jim Hastie-trained filly posted fractions of :38 for three furlongs, :50 for the half mile and 1:03 for five furlongs. Shirley Jones, a game winner of her last outing at Jamaica, will be one of the early choices in the Acorn. Belmont Parks new turf course was open for training on Wednesday and Pin Oak Farms imported Victory II. inaugurated the opening with an impressive mile jaunt in 1:39 handily. Handled by his regular exercise boy, Bill Madden, Victory II. stepped the first three-quarters in 1:13. Trainer Jack Weiperts Gleeful n. accompanied the Pin Oak racer, finishing up in a slower, 1:40, handily. Vanderbilt Horses Train The "dogs" were up on the upper turn on the main strip this morning as members of Alfred G. Vanderbilts barn were out in the slop for training. Village Idiot stepped 5 furlongs in 1:03, while Treasure Hunt covered the same distance in 1:05. That stables stakes winning filly, Sit This Out, dashed an equal distance in 1:03. Mrs. Wallace Gilroys member of the handicap ranks, Oh Johnny, prepping for his return to the races, stepped 5 panels in 1:03. This multi-stakes winner will be pointed for the rich 00,000 added Metropolitan Mile set for renewal on Saturday, May 30. Edward M. OBriens Spar Maid seems to have recaptured her last years form, speeding 6 furlongs over the slop in 1:13, the quickest time for that distance on the work tab. Spar Maid appeared to appreciate the "off" going and got the first half of her drill in :48M. Trainer Lucien Laurin had his champion filly, Quill, on the main track for a breeze in preparation for the Acorn. Quill, who seemed a trifle short in her seasonal debut at Jamaica when she finished out of the money, worked a slow half in :52. She should benefit greatly from that effort and may show to greater advantage Saturday. Cain Hoy Stables Hidden Talent, winner of a division of the Kentucky Oaks, was full of run during her 3 panel :35 stint. Hidden Talent will start in the Acorn. Llangollen farms Rise n Shine stepped a like distance in :36 breezing, while Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords juvenile prospect Armique stepped 3 furlongs in :35. Charfran Stables fleet Crafty Skipper came on the track after the fourth race and had a useful 7-furlong work in the good time of 1:24 over a drying out track. Equipped with the blinkers and his regular pilot, Bob Ussery aboard, the bulky three-year-old son of Crafty Admiral Molecomb Peak, by Nearco, zipped off fractions of :34 for 3 furlongs, :46 for the half mile, sped past the 5-furlong marker in a quick :59 and was caught passing the 6-furlong pole in 1:11. Trainer Lucien Laurin had planned to run Crafty Skipper in an overnight allowance race today, but had to alter his schedule for the handsome chestnut and decided on the public drill. Crafty Skipper will next be seen under colors in major competition i nthe rich 5,000 added Withers, a three-year-old test at one mile, set for renewal here on Saturday, May 23. J. J. GREELY Saddled the two-year-old, Goode Two Shoes, for a win first time out yesterday at Churchill Downs.
