WILLIAM HIN PHY Saddled Cruller for his fifth win of the current campaign yesterday at Suffolk Downs. Cruller Gains Fifth Victory of Season Outsider in Van Throughout Feature at Suffolk; Witch Off Runner-up by Mere Neck By FRED GALIANI SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 14. Louis Rittiners Cruller, winner of four races this year, garnered his fifth when he was a front-running victor in the featured Hamilton Purse here this afternoon. An outsider in the wagering, Cruller paid 0.80 and got home a neck before Gerry Colellas Witch Off, who was a length before Green Hill Farms Dandy Ron. Peter Fullers heavy favorite, Air Borough, tired to be fourth after chasing the pacemaker most of the journey. Timothy Donahue, getting his second winner of the afternoon, was on Cruller and the pair of them went the six furlongs in 1:14 over "a heavy strip, which still had some patches of water on it from recent rain. The day was pleasant, though, and a crowd of 8,921 attended. Steady Orleans Performer Cruller is a dark bay, three-year-old son of Cortil Kuchen, which is German for Cake, hence his name and has been a steady performer for the New Olreans stable. In 13 starts to date, he has five wins, two seconds and two thirds. Trainer Bill Hinphys charge to the lead at the start of the feature and paced his way down the backstretch. The rest of the field was a solid bunch behind the leader and not until they reached the far turn did they start to string out. Air Borough was second and Dandy Ron third as they went into the bend and the favoxite soon gave way to Switch Off, while Danny Ron clung to the rail position. Through the stretch, only Switch Off had a chance to overtake a favorite, but the four-year-old filly could only whittle her rivals lead down to a neck before the wire was reached. Dandy Ron finished third along the inside before Air Borough while Cliffs O-Dover, Lady Eternal and Ahead finished in that order, none of them being in contention at any time. s J J s j i j i i J 1 i
