Germany Schwarzgold Mile To Wiesenbluete By PHILIP SUWALL Our Frankfurt Correspondent FRANKFURT. A splendid miss whisked away last Sundays Dusseldorf 5,0000 Schwarzgold Mile, the German equivalent of the 1,000 Guineas. She is the brown filly, Wiesenbluete, owned by Gestuet Ravensberg, trained by the capable Johannes "Kuhr, sired by N e c k a r Ticino and from the dam, Windstille, a staunch member of the famous Waldrun family. Certainly, Wiesenbluete is one to progress and will not easily be turned back in Junes 1JA miles Preis Der Diana. Unfortunately, a similar compliment cannot be rendered the 11 others which participated in the. Schwarzgold. They all flattened out badly when the real racing began. Gestuet Roslers Liebeslust Mangon set a cracking pace down Dusseldorf s oak-tree, diagonal backstretch and this quick filly led her field up the hill and into the short straight. Ascona, the better half of Roslers entry, challenged boldly from the outside while Gestuet Astas Ostafrika by Vieux Manoir barged through to the inside. Neither Ascona nor Ostafrika were able -to quicken after hitting the front. In the distance, Wiesenbluete, under a confident ride by lanky Heins Gummelt, rallied with swiftness and determination to snatch a half-length verdict. Time was 1:41.5 on hard ground, caused by a sudden dry period in West Germany. Gestuet Astas Ostafrika was runner-up, one and one- quarter lengths before Roslers Ascona. .It was a grand afternoon of triumph for Ravenberg, a breeding-racing establishment owned by textile manufacturer J. D. Delius of Gutersloh. The stable also captured a 1,700 classified handicap with their four-year-old Neckar filly, Geraf fel. Geraf-fel, also by Neckar, is an all-around performer, effective over hurdles and fences. Meanwhile, Gestuet Erlenhof continued in miserable, rock-bottom, winless form as the classic hopeful, Nautilus Alizier Nixe, trailed five others home in the role of even-money choice. "Whats wrong with Erlenhof this season," asked a German regular, puzzlingly? "This never happened before." Thilas full brother, Thilbert, a three-year-old, also raced at the Dusseldorf. meeting, but couldnt find his action on the hard footing. It seems unlikely that this Walter Eichholz colt will come around in time for the classics. An impressive Dusseldorf winner was Stall Auroras French-bred colt, Wild Boy Brueghel Winnipeg, under Rumanian jockey Arstides Cucu. This attractive black colt with white stockings may fare better in the classics than most suspect. Ten years ago, Neuss Race Course lay dormant, pock-marked with deep bomb craters. With practically no funds, a temporary wooden grandstand and a primitive-main flat course were hastily constructed in 1951 and racing was held again on a modest scale. Tomorrow, the Neuss associations 1959 inaugural shows the effects of an ambitious reconstruction program financed by the city treasury. A brand new steel grandstand and restaurant to accommodate some 1,500 fans bears much resemblance to American race course architecture. In commemoration of the progress, Neuss offers a ,000 stake feature for four-year-olds and upward at 1 miles. Asta trainer Hans Blume last week elected , not to dispatch his crack Obermaat to Saint Clouds Grand Prix du Printemps . and will saddle the conqueror of Orsini at Neuss. The square outline of the small 1 1-16 miles course will not hinder Ober-maats chances. Danger lies in H. Kruses ! French-bred, chestnut Cinq Sous from . Charley Kellers Cologne Yard. The remainder of the Neuss field Wilderer, -Grind, Thiudar, Pfalzteufel, Thurfwulf, Olivetto and Ozean appear inferior in class. Monday, a German legal holiday, brings out the cream of the three-year-old crop in Horst Emschers 6,200 Henckel Mile, first jewel in the Triple j Crown. Colts carry 127 pounds, while fillies are assigned four pounds less. The Henckel Mile brings out two highly ranked colts in Gertuet Ravensbergs Waidmahn Neckar-Waldrun and Gestuet Schlenderhans Basuto Asterios- Bella Donna. Waidmann took two Continued on Page Fifty-One Report From Germany By PHILIP SUWALL Continued from Page Eleven classics as a juvenile, Colognes Oppen-heim Rennen at six furlongs and Dortmunds five-furlong Sierstorpff. Basuto first reached his maximum in the fall when he trounced a good field in Colognes Preis des Winterf avoriten Mile. Much more light will be shed on the Hamburg Derby following the running of the Henckel. Despite Basuto and Waidmann, favoritism may be bestowed upon Gestuet Rott-gens big, chestnut Waldcanter by the Italian sire, Carand Ache. Waldcanter looked a classic colt in Krefelds semi-classic Paul Doering Rennen and the big-framed, long-striding colt owns an edge in condition. Nevertheless, your correspondent rests with Basuto as the most promising German sophomore in view. Other members of the Henckel field are Ravensbergs Sperber by Neckar, Dr. Stocks Manitu Burgemeister , Erlenhof s Aspiration Ticino, Stall Emscertals Matterhorn Wirbelwind , Gestuet Astas Bismarck Neckar, Roslers Arminius Asterios and the Zoppenbroich filly, Sommerblume Nebelwefer . Schnitzel: Peter Alafi, talented 22-year-old Hungarian rider, had seven winners last week. A double at Nieder-rad, four successes at the Dortmund-. Wambel and a single at Dusseldorf. " " Alafis forward seat and exaggerated short stirrups is a marked contrast to the long-accepted, conservative German school. . . . Orsini will robably not start in West Germany, until the 4,000 Grosser Preis von Baden in August. Erlenhof recently nominated the colt to Englands King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at a mile. Orsini and nine other Ger-man-breds were nominated to Norways Oslo Cup. Orsini took the stake last season. . . . Juvenile racing commences in West German the first June Sunday. . . . Blysmus easily trounced seven others at Longchamp last Sunday over five furlongs in the blistering time of 58:3. The Abendfrieden-Blaubeere colt was even money favorite. This column recommended Blysmus two years ago as the ideal type for American sprint racing. Thirty-six fillies remain eligible for Mulheims Preis der Diana. . . . Gerhard Striet, 48-year-old veteran jockey, has a slight lead .over Hein Bollow in the jockeys list. Striet has ridden seven Hamburg Derby winners and is still deadlocked with Otto Schmidt for the honor. . . . Swiss owner W. -Maag last week gave three French-breds to trainer Andreas Hecker in Prankfurt-Niederrad. The trio were form-! erly trained by K. Ippen in Paris. They are 1 Scandinave, a five-year-old colt by NorsemanCeres m., by Nosca; the three-year-old filly, Soap Bubble, by Cranach Balle Perdue and the three-year-old filly, Syene, by Nat de Cocagne from Surtis,- by The tMac Nab.
