On-and-On Turns In Impressive Five Furlongs Move of 1:00 for Tri-State Calumet Farm Colt Set for 4 Balmoral Stake on Monday; Benbecula Also Works Well HOMEWOOD, 111., May 14. Calumet Farms On-and-On streaked through an impressive 5-furlong workout in lOVs this morning over Washington Parks fast strip, serving notice he will take a lot of beating in Balmorals opening-day 5,000 added Tri-Stakes Monday here at Washington Park. The well-regarded and controversial son of Nasrullah Two Lea broke from the gate with stablemate Seventy-Six, left that one after 3 furlongs, hit the half-mile marker in :48, then completed his 5-panel breeze under wraps. Clockers termed the work exceptionally impressive. The Calumet colt was full of run, almost to the point that he wanted to get away- with his rider. H. A. "Jimmy" Jones afterward expressed complete satisfaction with the way On-and-On is coming up to the Tri-State. At the same time it was expected that jockey Chris Rogers, who earlier this winter piloted Troilus to victory in the 00,-000 added Flamingo at Hialeah, will be aboard On-and-On in the Balmoral inaugural feature. The combination will be meeting William G. Gilmores Fightin Indian, another who has been blazing in the mornings, who will be handled by Johnny Longden. Another Tri-State probable. Darby Dan Farms Benbecula, was only breezing as he turned in 6 furlongs in 1:17. Benbecula, possessed of as much early speed as any in the Tri-State probable field, dropped a quick sprint decision to Tomy Lee three weeks ago at Keeneland, later showing speed for much of the iyB miles before yielding. Another distinct probable is Sair and Hatskins Master Palynch, winner of the Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds, who returned from a scheduled engagement in Saturdays Preakness. The Crafty Admiral offspring has been nominated for the Tri-State and trainer Elmer Kalensky may elect to start him Monday. Among other Tri-State probables are Jacnot Stables twosome of Die Hard and CurranO; William J. Schmidts Quick Wit, Silver Creek Farms Roman Colonel, Priscilla D. Willis Little Tytus, Carrie C. Hillocks Quantrell, and E. A. Bischoffs Jack Flynn.
