Apprentice Chavez Astride Two Winners in U.S. Riding Bow CAHOKIA DOWNS, East St. Louis, 111., May 14. Arriving here from his native Cuba and unheralded, apprentice Cicilio Chavez, who was at first thought to be a maiden reinsman, proved he was an accomplished saddlesmith here Wednesday night. The Cuban, who handled Mile. Riba in the first race like a veteran rider, proved his ability in the third race when he put up a brilliant front-running rating job to win with Paul Younts Saginaw Red, then came back in the eighth and gave a "chilly" exhibition on Paul Lezcanos Helens Song, showing his finishing ability when collared by Bobtail Willie in the stretch, handling his charge in the drive like a veteran. Chavez was one of the leading apprentices in Cuba before coming here and acknowledged having ridden 34 winners in his native Havana. Since there is a lack of clever apprentice riders here the Latin youngster probably will be kept busy the remainder of the season. He is under contract to Pedro Mon-talvo, a regular in this area for many years.
