Nodob Takes Hyperion Purse at Downs While Giving Brooks Double in Saddle Paul E. Adams Colt Posts 4 1 :12 for Six Furlongs Over Muady Oval to Beat Know It By BUD LYON Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 14. Displaying a distinct liking for the prevailing "muddy" track, Paul E. Adams Nodab raced to a popular two and one-half length victory in the featured Hyperion Purse, a high-priced claiming event for three-year-olds, here before 7,100 fans this coolish afternoon. Runner-up honors went to Jim Paddocks- Know It with the Big Dipper n. gelding finishing over three lengths before Harry Rossets Mans Folly who was approximately the same distance to the good of Gentilly Stables Marje Everett. Steve Brooks had Nodab in motion right from the outset to take a clear lead before completing the opening furlong. The colt raced well removed from the inner rail in choosing what appeared to be the better footing to respond when shaken up by Brooks at the top of the lane and dispose of a bid from Know It at that point. While there was daylight separating the pair at the eighth pole Brooks still kept at the colt and scrubbed right down to the line of finish although the action appeared unnecessary. This three-year-old son of Mameluke has been lightly raced in his short career as today was but his sixth start and second victory. Nodab required 1:12 to get the distance, fast time considering the track condition, and as a mild choice with the fans he returned .20. Jim Paddocks Pipit notched he second win in succession in the Bold Venture Purse, fifth event of the afternoon, when the Daily Double Jay mare registered easily in that three-quarters d a s h . V. Rasmussens Pym. Clarence Meaux had the Louisville-owned mare on top of her field for all but the first few strides and made a runaway race of the event as she proved the easiest sort of winner while getting the distance in 1:12. She paid .80 to become the first favorite of the afternoon to prove successful. Steve Brooks edged a notch closer to Clarence Meaux in the race for leading rider honors at the meeting by taking down the opener with a particularly strong ride aboard Bill Veeneman and S. Reynolds Raven Wing. The maiden two-year-old gelding came from just off the early pace to register by nearly four lengths while racing the 5 furlongs distance in 1:02, over a holding "muddy" strip... place monors fell to Mrs. P. L. Clements Submersion who was three lengths before Lucas B. Combs Queening It at the end. The solid choice, Ralph Paracheks Gail-star, was far back throughout and appeared unwilling to extend herself in the going. Raven Wing returned 0.20. A rank oustider came up with a big stretch run-in the second when Mrs. Paul Reckers Louis S. got up in the final stride to head the favorite, Clear Springs Stables General Fred, by a head at the end of 7 furlongs. Bob Parrott was astride the 34-1 shot who raced the distance in a moderate l:28y5, while setting up a Daily Double payoff of 41.60.
