Close Finishes in First Three Events at Maumee Trainer G. Williams Has Double Tally With Midian, Disgraceful By T. J. MULLIGAN Staff Correspondent MAUMEE DOWNS, Maumee, Ohio; May 14. An early estimated crowd of 2,500 braved the elements here this afternoon to witness the eight-race program. Cloudy skies and a fast track prevailed with the temperatures in the 40s, as topcoats and winter apparel were evidenced. Ruths John, an Eternal Bull offspring, sporting the pink and black silks of As-Lan Stable, got up in time in a blanket finish in the curtain-raiser. He was a neck before C. N. Fillmores Gascony, who was a half-length to the fore of H. K. Kmiecs Midnight Sands. The latter was a neck the best of Alyce Arbs Jittery Jill. The victor, slow to gain his best stride, moved up to engage the leaders at the final elbow then bulled his way between horses to reach the wire in time. Gascony loomed up menacingly at the head of the stretch then could not cope with the winner in the concluding strides. Midnight Sands closed with good energy after lacking early speed. Ruths John paid .40 and was ridden by jockey R. D. Royston. Disgraceful, racing under the banner of A. Wool, nosed out F. M. Ashbys Bulnes Day for the major portion of the purse in the third race on the agenda. A. Stanishs Blue Dancer was a nose in arrears of Bulnes Day for secondary honors. The winner was ridden by jockey Bobby Venne and returned 1.60 and gave trainer G. Williams his second saddling victory of the afternoon. Williams also tightened the girth on Midian for his winning effort in the second race. Midian, a gray horse by Migoli from the establishment of Jeanne C. Bird, chalked up his first win at Maumee Downs when he surged up on the outside in the second race to reach the wire a head in advance of S. Iveners Waihole. Jockey Vic Bovine kept Midian under restraint during the early running, applied his whip nearing the final bend and the Bird racer surged up on the outside to nip S. Iveners Waihole right at the wire. Pavace, who set the pace to the head of the stretch, tired when called upon for her best. Midian. ignored in the wagering, paid a liberal 8.40 and completed the 45.80 Daily Double.
