, . 4 Fabulist Whips Red Hannigan In Queens County at Aqueduct , Atkinson Guides High Tide Gelding Home Three Lengths On-Top Before 23,266 Fans By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 13— Literally punching on the leaders in the long stretch after being close to the pace from the start, Ted Atkinson urged High Tide Stables Fabulist to the finish of the -9,450 Queens County Handicap here today three lengths before Woodley Lane Farms Red Hannigan. That colt was three parts of a length before Brookmeade Stables First Aid after setting the pace to the quarter pole, while Ethel SD. Jacobs Paper Tiger, who was the favorite coupled with Joe Jones, was another length out of the money. Fabulist returned 1.60 to his admirers in the opening-day throng of 23,266 after stepping the mile and a sixteenth in 1:43%, just four-fifths slower than Jacomars track mark, set back in 1940. Winner Earns 0,400 Fabulist netted 0,400 for Edward Burke, of Miami, Fla.. who races under the nom de course of the High Tide Stable. The four-year-old son of Mighty Story had won his last outing at Belmont Park, despite an unfavorable inside post position. He had the outside post today, which is-, equally unfavorable at this track, but had the speed to be third and saving ground at the. clubhouse turn. Paul Bailey sent Red Hannigan to the lead on the inside at the start of the Queens County, while First Aid was lapped Continued on Page Fifty-Two i Fabulist in Clever QueensCountyWin Atkinson Urges High Tide Racer Home Well Clear of Red Hannigan at Aqueduct Continued from Page One on the leader, with Fabulist in third place, only about a length farther back as they swung into the backstretch. While the leaders raced almost as a team, with Red Hannigan always about a half length before First Aid in the run down the backstretch and around the turns, Atkinson allowed them to draw away from Fabulist. Nearing the end of the far side, Full Flight ran into a blind switch and was forced to drop out of contention, while the lightly-weighted Gaidar began a strong run on the outside that carried him into fourth place nearing the stretch. Joe Jones was a distant sixth at the three ~~ furlong pole, while Paper Tiger was last. Turning for home, Red Hannigan arid First Aid* were still dueling on the lead, but Atkinson roused Fabulist and the roan gelding loomed up strongly on the outside, taking a head lead at the furlong pole and drawing away under a mild ride through the final eighth. Red Hannigan outfinished First Aid for second money, while Paper Tiger closed with a belated rush, followed by Joe Jones, who went very wide at the first turn, Gaidar, who hung badly, Resilient, Lychnus, Full Flight and Mel Leavitt. It was the second Queens County victory for jockey Atkinson who won the stake on Three Rings in 1949. Bunnys Babe Shows Improvement Col. E. P. Bixers Bunnys Babe, who was one of the better juveniles last year, fin- ishing third to Summer Tan and Nashua in the Cowdin, despite being cut down at the head of the stretch, then winning the New Jersey Breeders Stakes on a disqualification, showed remarkable improvement over his recent seasonal debut to capture the Brighton Beach Purse by two widening lengths over Woodley Lane Farms Blue Quest. Wheatley Stables Dark Ruler was almost a length farther back and a length and a half before Green-tree Stables Gold Box, the odds-on choice, who appeared to sulk in the stretch. Eric Guerin completed a triple on Bunnys Babe, having won the second race on Up Betimes and the fourth on Spicey Story. The winning son of Attention paid i I 6.40 and stepped the six furlongs in 1 : 11 over a track that had dried to fast after being sloppy this morning and "good" for the first two races. The hurdle race was a spirited contest, enlivened by John M. Schiffs Coimbra, who bolted at the second hedge, lost apprentice J. Willard Thompson, then cavorted about the infield, running through the lake, and attempting to rejoin the field at several points. Blue Run Farms Martingle outfinished Allison Sterns Danny Boy n., under Albert Foots hustling ride to score by a half length, while I Schiffs Spitn Polish, stablemate of Coimbra, was less than two lengths away in third place. The entry of L. R. Troianos King Gavin and Mrs. Mickey Walshs Basilia was favored, but the former lost Charlie Harrx at the final hedge, while Basilia finished fourth. Hirsch Jacobs, trainer of Isidor Biebers Hello Rita, who was disqualified from first position after turning back a group of ju- J . venile fillies in the first race, lost his second victory of the afternoon when Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Searching was relegated to last position after outf inishing James Pattons Riches in the seventh. Searching, with jockey Ted Atkinson astride, drifted out sharply, interfering with the Patton colt inside the stretch of the mile and one-sixteenth essay, then continued on gamely when straightened to prevail over her rival by a half length. The patrol fiims of the race clearly revealed the foul and indicated the Jacobs miss may have shied away from the" starting gate, situated inside the furlong marker.
