No Arrangement for Special Event On the eve of the Belmont running, a decidedly premature announcement of a match race between Swaps and Nashua, supposedly set for August 6 in Chicago, appeared in Sports Illustrated. No arrangements for such a special had been made, the date conflicting — as Swaps . owner, Rex Ellsworth, quickly pointed out — with the California colts previous engagements. However, even if the original rumor proved altogther baseless and ephemeral, there is no denying that there is a mounting enthusiasm for just such an encounter, and it may even actually take place if a date and locale suitable to both parties can be chosen. Following the victories of the pair on the week end, Hollywood Park was mentioned as a site for this match, but William Woodward stated today that his colt will not be sent to the Coast. We might point out that a trip across the continent in mid-summer and a race over the completely novel strip, would place Nashua under a considerable handicap. We retain too sad a memory of making a similar foray with Royal Vale two years ago to underestimate the inevitable difficulties faced by the "visiting team/ If this race, between "the best in the West" and our "eastern champion is to develop into something more than talk, we sincerely trust that the conditions will enable both, fine-u young thoroughbreds ., to appear at their best. . y , 4 i! . . ; •..
