New Jersey Notes MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport,* N. J., June 13. -S.toney Tar, from the Green Star Stable, is training at Monmouth Park -where he has engagements in three major stakes, the Rumson, Omnibus, and Long Branch handicaps. Winner of the Waterford Park and Great Lakes Stakes last season, Stoney Tar also has another distinction, having defeated the accomplished Helioscope here .in June. A couple of highly regarded juveniles are being pointed for the Tyro Stakes here on July 4, this event being for two-year-old colts and geldings. Trio Stables Smooth Stride and Ella K. Brysons Well Marked, both stakes winners previously, have the Tyro as their first major objective of the meeting. Smooth Stride, acquired from W. E. Leachs Dickey Stable, was the winner of the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica and Well Marked scored in a division of the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes during the winter. On opening day in 1954, Jimmy- Stout and Ira Hanford were on the list of active jockeys at the meeting and both won races. Today they were back at Monmouth Park, Stout as a steward associa,te and Hanford as a trainer. Two of the winners on last seasons opening program hold track records. Master Ace ran six furlongsin 1:09 to hold the mark for that distance and Audrey Lee, who ran five furlongs in :58%, now shares that record with Marys Bubble. Monmouth Park opened its "195% meeting with an attendance of 23,476 and a mutuel handle of ,606,223. Nine former jockeys are training horses at the current Monmouth Park meeting. The list includes Hilton Dabson, Merritt Buxton, Bobby Dotter, Ira Hanford, Johnny Gilbert, Porter Roberts, Charley Coco, Danny Perlsweig, and John Mooney. Mooney rode Black Gold to victory in the Kentucky Derby* 31 years ago. C? B. Schrecks Qualified and Argyle were arrivals from River Downs in Ohio and have been turned over to trainer Johnny Gilbert. Henry Block who has been trying to get a chance to ride at Monmouth Park for the last three years, "blocked" by changes in trainers plans and injuries, finally got into action on opening day in the second race and made good immediately with But First, completing a Daily Double of 87,20. Flashy Harp and Service Star belonging to the Shamrock Stable were arrivals at Monmouth Park over the week end, consigned to trainer Carl Hanford. Tom W. Kelly, who is campaiging horses at Monmouth Park, New York and Delaware, augmented the string he has at the local course with the performers Dairchee. Little Herman, Marchese and Kodoma.
