With Dave Erb, flown here from Chicago to replace the sidelined Willie Shoemaker, in the stirrups and swinging the colt hard early .to take him off the pace, Swaps moved up with an irresistible bid to take command entering the stretch, drew clear, and still in hand as he crossed the wire, beat Determine by a clear length. But that margin of victory doesnt begin to tell the story of hojv far Swaps outclassed his field, and that goes for Determine, too, for both Swaps and Determine were in at scale, 115 for the Ellsworth colt, 126 for Determine. While Erb lacked a bit of the precision of Willie Shoemaker, his job of piloting the Calif orina colt, who as of right now is by far and away the best colt this state has ever produced, he did an able and workmanlike job of his assignment, and as far as we could see, he never even thought of using his whip, even once. Indeed, Erb was looking around at the eighth pole, and seeing he was- in no serious trouble, elected to . hand ride it to the wire. Determine didnt have an excuse in the world, being clear at all times, and had all the opportunity he needed through the drive to catch up. But he couldnt. Mister Gus, the early pacemaker, was through when put to a challenge turning into the stretch, and finished third.
