Ellsworths Swaps, who gained turf immortality by winning this springs classic Kentucky Derby, lent further lustre to his reputation when he galloped to victory over older horses in a worlds record breaking - performance in last Saturdays Californian at a mile and-a sixteenth. The chestnut son of Khaled, who in May humbled the nations finest three-year-olds, just toyed with his opposition last Saturday and that opposition included A. J. Crevolins Determine, the 1954 Kentucky Derby winner and since rated one of the nations top handicap horses. Swaps met the year older Determine at level weights on the scale, 115 to 126 pounds, and beat him much more decisively than his winning margin of a length and a quarter would indicate. The time was 1:40%, two-fifths of a second faster than the Irish horse Poona II. established last winter at Santa Anita. , Llangollen Farms Mister Gus was third in the Californian after having set all of the early pace while following in his wake were King Ranchs Rejected, Neil McCarthys Novarullah and Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Kerrs Travertine. * Swaps was ridden by Dave Erb, who came from Chicago to pinch hit for the suspended Willie Shoemaker, and even Wee , Willie could not have improved on his handling of the colt. Trainer Misha Ten-ney instructed Erb to permit Longden and Mister. Gus to make the pace anc then let Swaps run the best race he knew how. Erb did just that and when he returned to the winners circle he said that Swaps-made better time than his flight from Chicago. Swaps broke in front but Erb quickly took him back to allow Mister Gus to show the way. Under strong restraint Swaps remained a length or two off the Llangollen horse to the stretch turn and then while still under wraps he took over himself. Once in the lead Erb just sat tight and the Ellsworth champion continued on to win as he pleased in a manner whichxwas reminiscent of the manner in which he subdued Nashua at Churchill Downs. * Determine, who was second to his older stablemate, Imbros, in last summers inaugural running of the Californian, raced the early furlongs of Saturdays special in third position and when he was called upon he responded willingly. He made a mighty l*un under Ray Yorks urging and near the finish was able to pass Mister Gus to earn second honors by a half length. It is ironic that both Determine and Mister Gus bettered the worlds record and still had to take secondary honors. The Californian was strictly a contest among the first three to finish, the other three having been soundly beaten. For Swaps, the Californian marked his second start since his Kentucky Derby triumph. On Memorial Day he scored a 12-length victory over the best three-year-olds here in the mile Will Rogers. In that event under 126 pounds he ran eight furlongs in 1:35 and won under a pull the like of which few have ever witnessed. Swaps, who was scoring his seventh straight and who is unbeaten this year, earned 3,700 in the Californian to boost his 1955 bankroll to 94,250. Those in the crowd of 51,210 who were so confident he would win were rewarded with a .30 payoff in the mutuels. Unless a proposed match race here between Swaps and Nashua materializes, Swaps will make only one more stand at Hollywood Park this summer. That will be in the 0,000 added Westerner at a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds on July 9. Then he will head for Chicago and Washington Park where another match race between him and Nashua has been proposed. The Ellsworth colts primary objective in Chicago, however, is the American Derby.
