Royal Stone Carries Off Honors in Susan Stakes Beats Out Rite-Step by Almost Length in ThistleDown Offering By J. R. BATTY Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 13. — Coming from far back with a bold rush in the late stages, Royal Stone got up to capture the third running of the Susan Stakes, featured race on the. card here Saturday. Royal Stone, owned by C. and P. Farm, nom de course of the partnership of Gastrop and Potrykus, collected ,185 as her share of this ,500 added dash of five and a half furlongs which brought together a bulky field of 15 juvenile lassies. An invader from Detroit and unsuccessful in eight previous tries in her career, Royal Stone joined the ranks of stakes winners and also left the non-winners class by edging out by slightly less than a length, William L. Huntleys Rite-Step, who gained the place award by a head over Bruj aria and another head away, Spanish Queen finished fourth in a tight finish. Queen Margie, owned by Tom F. Devereaux and also shipped here from Detroit expressly for this engagement, was backed into favoritism by the 11,652 fans who witnessed the Susan but this two-time stake winner faltered badly after pressing the early pace and ended up eighth. Royal Stone was ridden by Michael N. Gonzalez, who journeyed in from the Motor City just to handle the reins on the C. and P. Farm colorbearer. A striking looking bay daughter of Royal Blood — Mumbo Jumbo, by Reaping Reward and bred by the Detroiter Mark Leach, Royal Stone who had shown enough in two recent races at the Michigan Racing Association track to go away as second choice in the betting and paid .80. Trained by Bobby Cramer, Royal Stone had twice previously followed Queen Margie across the finish line when the latter scored her initial tally at Hialeah and in . the singing towerat Gulfstream Park.
