► Falsetto, Defeated in 1879, Sired Three Derby Winners CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — In the 1879 Kentucky Derby, the brilliant Falsetto, greatest son of Enquirer, met defeat. Previous to the Churchill Downs classic, the three-year-old Falsetto had won the Phoenix Hotel Stakes at Lexington, which marked his first appearance under colors. He did not race as a juvenile. Lord Murphy, the 11 to 10 favorite, beat falsetto by a narrow margin in the Derby. Later, Falsetto won the Clark Stakes, then was taken to Saratoga where he defeated the mighty Spendthrift in the Trav-ers and Kenner stakes. Falsetto then was purchased by Pierce Lorillard and sent to England. But he never raced abroad, breaking down the following year. After his return to the United States. Falsetto entered the stud and sired many notable thoroughbreds including three Kentucky Derby winners — Chant, 1894; His Eminence, 1901, and Sir Huon, 1906. Sir Huon also won the Latonia Derby and another of his sons, The Pickett, captured the American Derby.
