Set Shot Defeats Pink Mink By Head at Sportsmans Park SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, HI., May 1. — Despite the heavy and holding condition of the racing strip here this afternoon, a surprisingly large number of close finishes were recorded, and one of the tightest came about in the featured Eastern Air Lines Purse, when Set Shot defeated Pink Mink by a head, following a good stretch duel. Set Shot, owned by H. D. Maggio and ridden by Paul Bailey, moved up to catch Pink Mink on the stretch turn, was again topped by the latter after entering the stretch, but continued well to get the decision and pay .40 as the favorite. A field of eight paraded in the Eastern Air Lines, and Brookhaven made the pace, with Pink Mink, ridden by Domenico, in close attendance. Brookhaven began to shorten stride at the half-way mark, and Pink Mink went to the front, but nearing the stretch turn Set Shot found an opening next the rail on the inside of Pink Mink to challenge. The two raced to the wire closely aligned, with Set Shot on the inside getting the nod. The race was for ,000 purse, and the winner was saddled by Elmer Kalenski, who was one of the leading trainers here last spring. The attendance was 9,737.
