Arcaros Appearance Today Ties Mark of Mack Garner EDDIE ARCARO was born in Cincinnati, but the Arcaro family soon thereafter moved to Latonia, Ky., where the famed rider grew up. His diminutive stature and the weight of golf bags that he carried as a caddie determined him to seek employment as an exercise boy at the old Latonia racecourse. He still i£, incidentally, an avid golfer. Arcaro was developed as a jockey by Clarence E. Davidson. He rode in the Far West and at the Chicago half-miler, Sportsmans Park, and soon began to attract attention through his natural talent, l ► j and was employed by Calumet Farm, then 1 in process of formation by the late War- ren Wright. Calumets Privileged was among his first mounts of any prominence. Greentree acquired his contract and he rode for this establishment many years before becoming a free lance. Arcaro holds the record for riding Derby winners, with five successful mounts — Lawrin in 1938, WhirlawayJ 1941; Hoop, Jr., 1945; Citation, 1948, and Hill Gail, in 1952. He has ridden in the race 13 times and today ties Mack Garners record of having participated in 14 renewals of the stake.
