j Pete McLean McLean, Rider of Spy Defense, On Repetoire Two Years Ago ] PETE McLEAN will make his second ap- * pearance in the Derby, aboard Spy Defense j on whom he secured the mount when 3 Johnny Adams shifted to Social Outcast, stablemate of Native Dancer. It was two years ago that McLean came from Maryland to ride front-running Repetoire in the Run for the Roses. McLean still claims Repetoire would have won if he had not broken through the gate three times before the start. Although a native of Bel Air, Md., McLean started his racing career in California under the tutelage of Charles Shaw, Jr., now trainer of the Canadian Stable, owned by E. P. Taylor. McLean continues to work for Shaw in New York, and came to Louisville with plans to ride Blue Repeater, who was withdrawn from the Derby after pulling up "ouchy" from the Derby Trial.
