Wallace No Derby Stranger; Rode Modest in 24 Renewal JAMES WALLACE, Curragh Kings trainer, is saddling his first Kentucky Derby starter, but he is no stranger to the Derby, having ridden Modest, thirteenth to Black Gold, in 1924. Wallace rode for about 20 years and handled Exterminator several times when Old Bones was near the end of his career. He also won the Pimlico Cup with Rockminister and scored in such stakes as the Hopeful and Saranac. He is a brother-in-law of J. D. Mooney, who rode Black Gold in the glamorous 1924 Derby. Wallace has trained a public stable, mostly in California, since 1937. He took over the training of the E. M. Goemans horses last summer in Chicago.
