Whirlaway Gave Ben Jones Most Difficult Time of All CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — Ben A. Jones, who has tightened the girth on six Kentucky Derby winners, perhaps had his most difficult time with Calumet Farms Whirlaway, 1941 victor and the mile and one-quarter track record holder, 2:0125. Whirlaway, a son of Blenheim II. and Dustwhirl, was a roguish individual and was given to sudden displays of temper and unruliness. Jones, one of the most patient of "old school horsemen," spent many hours with Whirlaway before the Derby. Convinced that the colt was an unusually speedy individual, Jones taught his charge all the tricks of the trade and his patience and tact were well rewarded by Whirleys eight lengths triumph.
