Citation and Hill Gail Only Two to Win Trial and Derby CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — Citation and Hill Gail, both owned by Calumet Farm, and handled by Eddie Arcaro, are the only two horses ever to win the Derby Trial and Kentucky Derby. The Derby Trial had its inaugural running in 1938, although the race really began five years previous when it was known as the Preparation Purse. Head Play won in 1933 while Peace Chance took the second running the following year and also broke Twenty Grands mile track record by one-fifth of a second, covering the distance in 1:35%. The "Trial" then was worth only 00 to the winner. Neither Head Play, nor Peace Chance won the Derby. But Head Play never will be forgotten because of the duel he had with the late Col. E. R. Bradleys maiden Brokers Tip, or rather the "battle" between the respective jockeys, Herb Fischer and Don Meade. Meade shoved Brokers Tip over the line, victor by a nose over his illustrious challenger.
