Eyes of Texas Upon Entry Of Constantin, Oil Tycoon EUGENE CONSTANTIN, JR., owner of Royal Bay Gem, has behind him the hopes of Texas in the 79th running of the Derby. Constantin is an oil man in all phases of the business, production, refining and marketing. Like most other Texans, he is a horse enthusiast. He came into racing as an owner by chance some 16 years ago, and now owns ten broodmares. Constantin believes in breeding a few of his own, but not too many so as to allow some leeway to purchase stock each year at the Keene-land sales. Constantin has made nominations to the Derby for the past three years, but Royal Bay Gem is his first starter. He selected Royal Bay Gem at the sales on pedigree, and his trainer, Clyde Troutt, approved the purchase on conformation. Royal Bay Gem cost only ,500 and Constantin says he is one of the great bargains of recent years.
