Exterminator Noted Substitute- CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — A stable companion for Sun Beau and "work horse" for whom the late W. S. Kilmer paid 2,000 and shipped to Louisville, contending that trainer Henry Mc-Daniel purchased a lemon, made history in the 1918 Kentucky Derby. McDaniel decided to start the "work horse" in the big race and his charge lay back of the pace on the muddy track until reaching the stretch, then turned it on and galloped to victory at almost 30 to 1. The "work horse" — the great Exterminator, who won no less than 50 of his 100 starts and became one of the most beloved thoroughbreds ever to peek through a bridle — distances and track conditions never making any difference to the chestnut gelded son of imported McGee.
