McLeod, West Coast Trainer, Once Baron Longs Foreman N. R. "YORKIE" McLEOD is making his debut as a Derby trainer this year with Invigorator. "Yorkie" is strictly a West Coast trainer; did not race in the East until two years ago, when he brought the Allison and Prestridge horses to New York. Born in Michigan, McLeod started galloping horses in Western Canada, but his career as a rider was short because of increased weight. He became foreman for the stable of Baron Long at Tijuana in 1926, then trained for Louis Almgren, fire chief of San Diego and long a racing devotee. Perhaps the best horse he ever trained for Almgren was Alviso, a sprint champion of his day in the West who raced through the ripe age of 14. McLeod made the acquaintance of Max Prestridge and Riley Allison at Del Mar and entered their employ in October, 1951.
