Mr. Turf Wins Briarwood Before 19,820 at Jamaica JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 1.— Jack Amiels Mr. Turf proved an able running mate for the 1951 Kentucky Derby winner, Count Turf, in the featured Briarwood Purse here today, leading throughout that mile and a sixteenth while his more illustrious stablemate barely succeeded in nosing out Deluge to avoid last place. Flyod H. Starks Guard of Honor forced the pace all the way, finishing three and a half lengths behind Mr. Turf and three lengths before Lazy F Ranchs Put Out. Woolford Farms Active Duty was a head of the money. A crowd of 19,820 turned out in gray, damp weather and the majority made the Amiel entry a tepid choice, according Gaurd of Honor and Deluge almost as much support. The favored entry paid .70, .90 and .30 across the board, while Mr. Turf was timed in 1:44% on the sloppy track. Albert Widman rode the winner, rating the four-year-old Sun Again — Thine colt nicely on the head end. Willie Lester was the riding star of the afternoon with a triple. The youngster took the opener on Miss Comeback 8.80, the third race on Fast Cash 2.90 and the seventh on Heiress, who paid .00 as the public choice. Lester was almost knocked donw at the first turn with Heiress, but bided his time and came on again at the* tsretch bend to score going away.
