Royal Bay Gem Has Services Of Combest, Rated Among Best JAMES "JIMMY" COMBEST Royal Bay Gem has never ridden in a Kentucky Derby before. He is well known to American race goers as a steady, dependable free lance jockey. A native of Kentucky, Combest makes his home in Columbia. He rode his first winner, Bengal Boy, at Keeneland in the fall of 1946. He considers Star Reward one of the best horses he ever has ridden. He won the Hawthorne Juvenile Stakes and the Motor City Handicap with the good campaigner, Johns Joy.
