Bruces Hope Realized CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky.. May 1. — The Kentucky Derby was founded with "high hopes," R. G. Bruce, editor of a Blue Grass State newspaper, wrote back in 1875. "Today will ever be historic in the turf annals of Kentucky as the first Derby Day of what I hope to see a long series of turf festivities." A glance through the Derby records certainly reveals Editor Bruces hopes have been amply f unfilled. On several occasions over 100,000 people witnessed Kentucky Derby renewals.
