Derby Trainer Record Held By Ben A. Jones With Six CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — Ben A. Jones, the sage of Parnell, Mo., who came out of the west with a small /stable on his way to the big time, holds the Kentucky Derby trainers record with six successes. * Jones first fortune in the "Run for the Roses" was achieved with Herbert M. Woolfs Lawrin in 1938. He then joined the Calumet Farm forces, and sent out five Derby victors under the devils red and blue colors of that famed establishment: Whirlaway, 1941; Pensive, 1944; Citation, *S48; Ponder, 1949, and Hill Gail last year. The late H. J. "Dick" Thompson held the mark up with four until Jones tied it with Citation and broke it with Ponder. Thompson, known as "Derby Dick," put the tack on Behave Yourself, 1921; Bubbling Over, 1926; Burgoo King, 1932, and Brokers Tip, 1933. The quartet was owned by the late Col. E. R. Bradley.
