One Count, Crafty Admiral Compete Seek Gallant Fox With Eight Others Horse of Year and Handicap ■ Champion of 1 952 in Rubber Meeting at Jamaica Today By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent j JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 1.— While | the Kentucky Derby is occupying the nations headlines, Long Island racing enthusiasts are not precisely being neglected tomorrow. The Horse of the Year and the , handicap champion of 1952 are slated to have their "rubber" meeting in the 0,000 Gallant Fox Handicap, which is to have its fifteenth running at a mile and three-sixteenths at Jamaica. Mrs. Walter M. Jef- • fords One Count and Charfran Stables Crafty Admiral are the topweights in the field of 10 assembled for this first of the seasons major handicaps with 129 pounds each, which means that One Count is rated a pound better on the scale. In their previous encounters, One Count scored an easy triumph in The Jockey Club Gold Cup, while Crafty Admiral stopped badly in that two miles, while the Fighting Fox five-year-old won the McLennan Handicap at Hialeah last winter, with One Count stopping in the stretch. Crafty Admiral was said after the Gold Cup by trainer Bob Odom to have been overtrained for the race, while One Count went into the McLennan a trifle "short," having missed a vital work because of the steady rains. The two champions are now apparently in excellent condition, though One Count has the advantage of having had a winning race over the Jamaica strip this spring, while Crafty Admiral has not started since his victory in the Gulfstream Park Handicap in March. Gorman to Ride Invigoraror Dave Gorman passed up the mount on Invigorator in the Kentucky Derby to ride One Count tomorrow, while Kenny Church, who usually fares well on these expeditions, is coming in to pilot Crafty Admiral. Church rode him in the McLennan and Gulfstream Handicap last winter. Alfred G. Vanderbilts First Glance Is next in the Gallant Fox weights with 119 pounds and finished well in an overnight handicap at a mile and a sixteenth won by C. V. Whitneys Cold Command on Monday. The Vanderbilt horse, who won the Excelsior earlier in the meeting, tried to give Cold Command seven pounds on Monday, concedes only four tomorrow. First Glance was allowed to drop almost out of contention rounding the far turn in that race, then finished with a powerful rush, but was beaten almost two lengths. Cold Command had preceded his victory on Monday by two sprint triumphs and is apparently much improved. Ovie Scurlock will ride First Glance tomorrow, Eric Guerin being otherwise engaged on Native Dancer in Kentucky, while Hedley Woodhouse replaces Dave Gorman on Cold Command. Royal Vale Serious Factor Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Royal Vale could be a serious factor in the Gallant Fox with 113 pounds if the weather clears and the track becomes fast. The English colt comes from a stakes victory over moderate horses at Bowie and set a worlds record on what remained of Hialeahs grass course, which had been thoroughly worn away by that time, in the Miami Beach Handicap at a mile and a half for his two outstanding performances in this country. However, Royal Vale has shown, both at Hialeah and at Jamaica, that he cant handle a wet track. The strip is sloppy at this writing, but dries with remarkable speed and could be fast by tomorrows sixth race. Jack Westrope, who is in excellent form, will ride the invader tomorrow. The Gallant Fox field is completed by Myhelyn Stables Master Fiddle, 113; Belair Studs Golden Gloves, 111; J. W. Nizleks Lafourche, 105; David Shaers Sun Rene, 104, and Ogden Phipps Great Captain, also 104 pounds. Golden Gloves and Great Captain will be coupled, being saddled by Jim Fitzsimmons. Master Fiddle has not raced to his works at this meeting, encountering some trouble in his last two starts, but not enough to be valid excuses. Gene Rodriguez will ride the gray son of First Fiddle, who won the Wood Memorial here last year.
