Lieutenant Faces Three Stout Fort Miami Foes Mile Handicap Features Derby Day Program at Ohio Course By R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent FORT MIAMI, Maumee, Ohio, May 1.— The first Saturday of May, Derby Day, will find the Fort Miami track sharing in the national attention directed towards thoroughbred racing, and the sporting gentry of Detroit and Toledo will find the local card equal to the glamorous tradition that is sweeping racing into the limelight as Americas national pasttime. Six interests will compete in the Mile Handicap, which headlines the Derby Day program at this racecourse. Mascow 1c Edlunds Lieutenant will face three previous winners at the Maumee site in an attempt to gain his first victory locally, though boasting a fine record this season. D. T. Watts Silver Valjean, Boschult and Holthus Alfred Boulder and Bailey Stables One Swallow are the trio of winners which will face Lieutenant with R. J. Browns Thomas H. and Sam Davids Cross Bayou filling the field. Lieutenant was a bang-up second in his only local start, closing ground in bounding fashion in a five-and-a-half-furlong sprint. The gelded son of War Dog— Sweeping Fay had previously won four races during a winter campaign at Sunshine Park and has shown a preference for middle distance racing. He will be handled by the veteran Buddy Mills again, and should make his initial trip to the Maumee winners circle. Silver Valjean and Alfred Boulder were sprint winners in allowance company in I their local victories and should not be frightened by the presence of Lieutenant. These two are also geldings who have been previously victorious at route distances and will enliven the mile race at all stages. One Swallow departed from the maiden ranks in his local score and will be out to prove his mettle against the older thoroughbreds. Cross Bayou has an outside chance to upset, while Thomas H. remains an unknown quantity, making his first start as a three -year-old. Racegoers here will be treated to an extra attraction on tomorrows card as the new six-furlong chute, constructed by the forward-looking management, will be unveiled for the first time. Five races have been carded over the new distance, proving its immediate popularity with the local horsemen.
