Ted Atkinson Atkinson Attains Wide Fame With Famous Greentree String TED ATKINSON Straight Face has been one of Americas leading riders for years, and has been top-string pilot for the famed Greentree Stable in recent seasons. Atkinson is back in the saddle this spring after a layoff occasioned by a spill in Miami late in the season, but is riding in his usual good form. Atkinsons story has been told so often that a repetition here would be superfluous, but just for the record, he started business life as a shipping clerk in Brooklyn, and, on the chance remark of a truck driver, took up riding. He started with Greentree in 1936, and rode his first winner May 18, 1938 with Musical Jack at Beulah Park.
