► — , Sportsman s Midwestern Purse Engages Bishop, VanBerg Duos Albemarle, Tottenham, Can * Locate, McGrathiana Have Speedy En Fleur to Defeat By J. J. MURPHY Staff Correspondent SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, HI., May 1. — The Midwestern Purse, at seven furlongs for a ,000 award, will be the main attraction here Saturday and William Hal Bishop, leading trainer at the meeting, will provide the favored entry in Albemarle and Tattenham, who finished first and second, respectively, in the Sun Briar Purse last weekend. The pair will be opposed by Can Locate and McGrathiana, from the barn of Marion VanBerg; Blunt and Cross Ring, owned by Merle Mitchell; En Fleur, owned by J. P. Cleary; Lady Indian, representing Mrs. Steve Ippolito, and Whirlahead, owned by J. J. Lombardo. Albemarle had things much his own way in winning the Sun Briar and came back Tuesday to take another purse when he won the Chance Play by a half length from Royals Last. The four-year-old son of Requested appears to be in excellent condition at present. Tattenham, second to Albemarle in the Sun Briar, was making his first start of the meeting and should improve. He defeated My Time by three parts of a length in the race. My Time came back to be second to Cajac. Has Won Three Races in Row The filly En Fleur has now taken three purses in succession, including one in Florida and two at this meeting. The miss beat Neverlator and Legatee in an allowance affair on the second day of the meeting, and came back last Saturday to win the ,000 Spring Handicap in which she beat Blunt, Whirlahead and others at seven furlongs. Her time on the muddy track was one-fifth second slower than that made by Albemarle in the Sun Briar on the same day. McGrathiana started here Thursday when he went postward as a running-mate with Cajac. It was the first start of the year for the colt, and he was never in the hunt, finishing sixth in the affair won by his stable companion. Can Locate, like McGrathiana, was rested all winter and was unplaced in his first start here. These VanBerg racers figure to improve, however. Blunt was winner of the Inaugural Handicap in his first start at Sportsmans Park. He beat Whirlahead, Heliowise and others in the seven-furlong event. Coming back later, Blunt finished second to En Fleur in the Spring Handicap, being beaten a neck by the latter. Cross Ring, Lady Indian and Whirlahead have all had their chance here and failed to win, although Whirlahead was bang-up to En Fleur and Blunt in last Saturdays feature.
