Tennessee Wrights Career A Leaf From an Alger Story V. R. "TENNESSEE" WRIGHT is saddling his first Derby starter today in Money Broker, and his is indeed a story of success from the bottom up. Wright was born on the farm of Mrs. Laura Branham — Fox-hall Farm, near Gallatin, Tennessee, where his father was foreman. Wright served a hitch in the Army, but upon his discharge returned to Tennessee because he "wanted to be around horses." Wright rode some flat races in the Iroquois steeplechase meeting at Nashville, but thought his true career lay in the care of horses. He joined the stable of P. L. Grissom as a groom, and when his brother, P. A. Grissom, and his partner, Edward Grosfield, decided to race a stable, they hired him as trainer. Wright is named for the family preacher, Vester Richard.
