He is by one of Englands most spectacular classic winners and his dam belongs to a distaff family which has also produced classicism. Tudor Minstrel, Tomy Lees sire, won the classic Two Thousand Guineas at one mile by eight lengths and was considered a "mortal" for the Derby at Epsom. However, in the mile and one-half Derby he faltered and finished fourth and subsequent races proved him to be a masterful miler but unable to handle the best of his generation at 10 furlongs or beyond. Tudor Minstrels lack of classic stamina was inherited through his dam, Sansonnet, who couldnt be carried beyond 5 furlongs. Tudor Minstrels sire, Owen Tudor, by Hyperion out of the French Thousand Guineas winner and French Oaks second, Mary Tudor II., won both the 12-furlong Derby and the 2y/2 miles Ascot Gold Cup. Iona was out of Jiffy, by the staying Hurry On. Jiffy produced several class winners, including Ocean Swell, winner of stakes from 6 to 20 furlongs, including the Derby, Jockey Club Cup and Ascot Gold Cup.
