Mathews, a 26-year-old railroad clerk from Vinita Park. Mo., a suburb of St. Louis, was presented with a ; two-year-old colt by Oil Capitol in the winners circle at Churchill Downs today by Patrice Jacobs, youthful owner of the Kentucky Derby candidate, Our Dad. Mathews won the colt in the annual Kentucky Club Derby Day contest by coming up with the name Hopepharoil. Mathews, a voucher clerk for the Mis- souri-Pacif ic Railroad for the past seven years and a former star athlete in high school, where he was a three-letter man. submitted 20 names in the contest. He is an avid racing fan and a frequent visitor to Fairmount Park in East St. Louis, 111. He is also an outstanding golfer, his game averaging in the low 70s. Mathews lives at 2305 Menett Avenue with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William M. Mathews. His father is a mail carrier and accompanied his son here today. Neither had ever seen a Kentucky Derby before. He must decide by July 1 to either keep or sell the colt. All expenses until that time, plus those of his trip to see the Derby, will be paid by the Kentucky Club Tobacco Company.
