Following the last race the management will conclude its own entertainment program of bands and extras with a telecast of the Kentucky Derby over the tracks closed circuit TV system. Ray E. Vogelman Jr a John "Hernon heads the local Derby field as probable favorite and he will start under 116 pounds with Raul Sterling as his rider. Joseph Serio Jr.s Dr. Herb is highweight of 119 pounds and Mrs. Walter A. Edgars Nora Dares is his equal with the sex allowance at 114 pounds. They will be ridden by Rocco Sisto and Nick Shuk, respectively. Completing the group are Maryknoll Farms Poppy Jay, 116 and jockey Donald Nobrega: Mrs. Jules Gomez Half Acre, 116 and Harold Keene; Danny Sheas Eager Beaver, 113 and Henry Block; and Tyson Gilpins Serendipity, 113 and Bennie Green. Rallied to Win Eastern Shore John Hernon last Monday won the mile and 70 yards Eastern Shore Purse, rallying around and from behind to win by three-quarters of a length. He is an altered son of British Buddy — Hash Queen, by Hash who was bred by G. A. and M. E. Cooks Duntravlin Farm in Baltimore County. His present owner-trainer claimed him for ,500 from a winning race at Bowie this spring and since then the chestnut has shown steady improvement in all of his efforts. For his new owner he has won four races and placed twice. He picks up six pounds from the Eastern Shore but finished the strongest. Dr. Herb set the pace in the Eastern Shore and finished second. He carried his full Derby assignment and drifted out as if tiring in the final stages, the first middle distance effort of his career. He is a compact colt by Buy and Sell — Sensme, by Roman. Nora Dares is the only stakes winner in the field. She won the Blue Hen last season and the Miss Maryland this spring. She also finished second to Snom-mis in last years Pimlico Breeders at a mile and one-sixteenth. In the Eastern Shore she carried 109 pounds and tired after 6 furlongs to be beaten six lengths. Poppy Jay and Eager Beaver dead-heated for show, a length behind John Hernon. in the Eastern Shore. Poppy Jay was attempting the distance for the first time this season and appeared to tire. Eager Beaver also tired but was retrained from using his best early speed and could challenge Dr. Herb for the pace in the Derby. Half Acre was a winner at Bowie and is a longshot nominee for the Preak-ness. He has been training well at Bowie recently. Serendipity, although a non-winner this season, showed good speed in his blowout here this morning. He went three-eighths in :352/5. Poppy Jay made his move over the Laurel course in the same time. Nora Dares breezed three-eighths under stout x-estrain and was timed in :37, while John Hernon was limbered up with a gallop.
