E. LINDEMAN Staff Correspondent SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 1. — Charlies Song, who races in the interest of the Florida Shores Stable, heads a flashy band of seven sprinters in the Fleet Bird, ,000 6a/2 furlongs sprint event, a race that has been substituted as the feature event on the Saturday nine-race program. Oddly enough most of the contestants in the Fleet Bird are right back to vie in the f eature • after having, evaded the originally scheduled 0,000 Chicagoan Handicap because of the formidable Charlies Song. The Chicagoan Handicap was scheduled over the mile distance. Of the originally named horses. Pan, Neglectful, and Roman Artist are named back in the Fleet Bird Purse event. Charlies Song comes to the racing here well recommended off his recent success at the Florida tracks. In his last outing over the Gulfstream mile oval, the son of Spy Song — Sari Omar, by Sir Gallahad III. won a six-furlong dash in impressive style, having turned back such fleet horses as Betty Linn and Tara Telia, with a half-length margin to the good in l:093/5, with 116 pounds up. Charlies Song is well known for his early foot, and in the sprint-type races can usually hold his own when it comes to setting a sizzling pace and hanging on with determination when called upon. Raced With Good Company in Florida Charlies Songs other two outings over the Gulfstream course were highly impressive and he finished no worse than second on both occasions. Prior to that the Florida Shores entrant raced at Hialeah in outstanding performances, accounting for no less than two victories at the seven-furlong distance, and an impressive thud to Kentucky Pride and Hubcap in a handicap at 6 furlongs over a racing strip labelled good. Last fall at the Tropical Park race course he did equally as well, having won two sprint events. The Nissen and Brocks six-year-old horse Pan, winner of two out of his three starts at the meeting thus far, looms as the main threat to Charlies Song off his best efforts. Pans most recent winning performance was over 6V2 furlongs in which he won by a two-length margin over Twilight Run and Cals Choice, with 120 pounds up and clipping the distance off at 1:18% over a good race track. Pans previous races were just as impressive over the longer distance of a mile when he won by three lengths over Bishops Light and Mr. Seymour. The son of Alibhai and Dentelle was third in his only other start at the current meeting. Probably best of the remaining sprinters named to vie in the Fleet Bird purse event, is Roman Artist, from the racing establishment of Mrs. J, J. Smreker. Roman Artists one and only start at the current meeting wasnt too successful as he finished a deep fourth to Galcir and Running Wolf, but his Oaklawn Park races rate him a formidable foe for top money here. In his defeat here last week he gave a real fine performance as he forced the pace to the stretch turn and then took command, but in the last sixteenth he was unable to maintain his advantage and was a tiring fourth. That race should be of great benefit to him Saturday. Wallaces Strongs Neglectful is the only other originally named Chicagoan candidate to come back in the Fleet Bird event. This five-year-old altered son of Rico Monte is a stouthearted sprinter and should give a good account of himself with this type of field. Before shipping to Sportsmans Park, Neglectful won a mile and 70 yards feature and in winning displayed a lot of early speed and stamina.
