The Chosen One Only Maiden in Derby Field Mrs. Sadaccas Colt Making 13th Start; Combest to Ride CHURCHILL DOWNS. Louisville. Ky., May 1. — The Chosen One, a maiden who will be the choice of a scant few" of the 100.000 fans witnessing the Kentucky Derby here Saturday, will be opposing supersti- tion, making his 13th start against the elite of the nations three-year-olds. The Chosen One is a son of the "speed" sire. Andys Glory, by the Market Wise mare. Lutza. who boasts the route-running portion of his pedigree. Andys Glory was an excellent campaigner for Irving Gushen, national president of the Horsemens Be- nevolent and Protective Association, and from his first crop got the fine sprinter, Bumpy Road." The Chosen One is Lutzas third foal. Her previous offspring were A Dragon Killer, one of last years most durable sophomores and winner of the Arlington Classic, and Roman-Lu. a winner of nine races. The Chosen One is owned by Mrs. S. Helene Sadacca. trainer by Norman L. Haymaker and will be ridden Saturday by Jimmy Combest. Mrs. Sadacca is a Chicago sportswoman who entered racing eight years ago on the advice of her physician, who suggested she do something that would keep her out of doon. Her husband. Albert, is president of the Glo-Lite Corporation of Chicago al- though the family now lives in Florida . claimed a horse for his wife and the small stable, due primarily to the efforts of A Dragon Killer, has been highly successful almost from the start. Albert is "exhausted dragon — first class" of the Illustrious Order of Dragon Killers, a benevolent organization which numbers many turf people among it wide member- ship. Haymaker, who sent out his first Derby horse A Dragon Killer, last year, was born near Berryville. Va., in the heart of the Old Dominion horse country. He was an exercise boy for steeplechasers at 14 and later rode jumpers in competition. Haymaker started training in the 1930s and saddled his first winner 20 years ago, at Charles Town. The operator of a public stable. Haymaker considers A Dragon Killer the finest runner he has ever conditioned. He owns Clifton Farm, near Berryville. Combest, who was born in Louisville, is a veteran lightweight who has been aboard more than 400 winners. His standout triumphs were on Johns Joy, in the 1948 Hawthorne Juvenile and 1949 Motor City Handicap at Detroit. This will be the 32-year-old hardboots third Kentucky Deroy appearance. In 1953, he finished fourth aboard Eugene Constan-tin Jr.s Royal Bay Gem behind Dark Star, Native Dancer and Invigorator.
