1 i i I | ! j i ! : j I Inaugurate Nebraskan Today at Fonner Park ,500 Feature for State Owners Draws Curley Kem and Foxy Moss By DEAN WILLIAMS Staff Correspondent FONNER PARK, Grand Island, Nebr., May 1. — Saturday Fonner Park will inaugu- rate the running of the Nebraskan, a Nebraska owners handicap. The ,500 event will be the first time that a race has ever been offered in the state for Nebraska-owned horses. The six and one-half furlong handicap carries the largest purse ever offered at Fonner Park. Paul Kemlings crack homebred, Curly Kem, has drawn the top impost of 120 pounds. The son of Bull Wagon is undefeated in two starts this year over the local five-furlong oval. Curly Kem accounted for his initial vie-to: y of the season in his debut by turning back Third Base at 6 furlongs. The son of Bull Wagon was backed down to a short price and was forced to an all out effort to turn back the Wiggins gelding. He covered the 6 furlongs in 1:14, fastest time of the meeting. The Kemling gelding was backed to an even shorter price in his most recent effort and, as in his first start, he was forced to a maximum effort. His margin of victory was the same one-length over the "good" track. This triumph came at the expense of the outsider, Nights Pick. Trainer M. G Stubbs will send out the entry of William Wiggins Foxy Moss, carrying second high weight of 116 pounds, and R. C. Gilmores Thoughtless, in at 112 pounds. Foxy Moss has been a beaten favorite in both of his starts over the local course. His first setback came at the hands of Ben Fogelsons Bid Me in the Invitational Handicap at 5x/2 furlongs on the first Sat-ury of the meeting. He disappointed local racing fans in his most recent endeavor by finishing third behind Gille Machree and Red Case. Owner Ben Fogelson will be represented in the Nebraskan by Bid Me and Beau Clerc. The Lincoln horseman has a strong entry in the duo and they should have an excellent chance of gaining the winners share of the ,500 purse. Bid Me has accounted for two feature events at Fonner Park this year. Her first triumph came as an outsider when she defeated Foxy Moss in the Invitational Handicap on the first Saturday of the meeting. She was well played in her next effort last Saturday when she turned back Midnight O. and Schnoz-Durante. Gille Machree has also gained two victories this year at Fonner Park. The speedy bay mare accounted for her most important win in the Broken Bow Purse when she defeated the allowance performers, Red Case and Foxey Moss. I ! j j I | , !
