Field of 12 Seeks Puritan Handicap Goulash Seen Choice Over Admirals Joy, Little Hermit And Greek Star at Suffolk By ELI CHIAT Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 1. — A field of 12 has been named overnight for the 1,560 Puritan Handicap, mile and one -sixteenth feature event on Saturdays 10-race program. While the field lacks any standout performer, it has attracted a dozen of the better local stars and it gives every indication of being one of the closest events of the year in Yankee-land. If the field remains in its present size the winner will earn a prize of ,514. Topweight in this wide-open affair is Gerald Colellas Admirals Joy under 116 pounds. He will be faced by Peter liters Goulash, 114; John Kroeses Little Hermit, 114; Liz-Tree Stables Necromancer, 114; Mclver Pricketts Motor Line, 112; Rox-bury Stables OKeegan, 112; Sidney Bartons Greek Star, 111; Hept Stables Dark Tale, 111; Pete Issaris Greek Admiral, 111; Louis Rittiners Marlow Road, 109; Bill Resseguets War Signals, 106 and Bayside Stables Erics Pet, 105. Won Newport at Lincoln The honor of being favorite in this race will likely fall to Goulash, winner of the Newport Handicap at Lincoln Downs. In that mile and one-sixteenth race he defeated several of his opponents in the Puritan while carrying 116 pounds. It was his second victory of the year, having previously downed a field of shifty performers at Santa Anita. In his only start over this track, he was soundly trounced in the six-furlong Paul Revere Stakes. He definitely will appreciate the "off" racing strip and the added distance. Little Hermit, who checked in here earlier in the week from Jamaica, is rated closest to the favorite in the overnight line, and he is also given the next best chance to succeed. In a half dozen starts this year, he has a single win and one third to his credit while racing at Jamaica and Hia-leah. His lone conquest came over the grass course at Hialeah, and he also showed a fine 6 furlongs effort behind Kentucky Pride and Jovial Jove at the same track. Greek Star is another who did his earlier campaigning this year at Jamaica and Florida. He has failed to find the winners circle in nine starts but he has been close up in several engagements. He finished second to Fabius in an allowance race at Hialeah and was beaten only six lengths in the Inquisitor Handicap at Jamaica, finishing behind Isendu, Tinkalero and Kentucky Pride. Necromancer arrived here from Laurel without a winning race to his account this year. In five starts, he has a second and third to his credit, but last year was successful on six occasions. He will have a familiar jockey on him in the Puritan, as Johnny Choquette will have the riding assignment. Choquette was astride the five-year-old son of War Relic last year in several of his triumphs. Admirals Joy has failed to duplicate his sparkling win in the New Haven Handicap, early in the Lincoln Downs meeting when he simply toyed with his rivals as he reached the wire nearly eight lengths in front. If he can regain that form he should be a stiff foe in the Puritan especially over the "off" track. The others have the potential to make the Puritan a most interesting affair.
