Our Dad Bred to Go Derby Route Crops of His Sire Indicate Stamina Palestinian Just Short of Being Classic Winner; Dam Pheecikens Is by Alibhai Our Dad. on pedigree, is one of the few true mile and one-quarter horses in this Derby. His sire. Palestinian, from his first few crops has proved his ability to sire horses who can go on. His prize offspring, to date, is Promised Land, winner of seven distance stakes, including the Pimlico Special and the San Juan Capistrano. Palestinians first crop had a stamina index of 7.27 furlongs per win as two-year-olds. This is much higher than most U. S. sires, including their older winners. For example. Khaleds index in 1958 was 6.86 and Olympiad was 6.63. Alibhai Sired Determine Our Dads dam, Pheecikens, although a non-winner, ran well in good allowance company up to a mile and one-sixteenth. Her sire, Alibhai. has sired Determine, a former Derby winner, as well as several other 10-furlong stakes performers. Reigh Grey, Pheecikens dam. was a full sister to Count Fleet, the great Derby and Triple Crown winner of 1943. Palestinian was just short of being a classic winner. He lost the Wood Memorial to Olympia by a neck, the Preakness to Capot by a head, was third to Capot and Ponder in the Belmont, beaten only a length, and was also third in both the Derby and the Arlington Classic. His victories included the Endurance Handicap at two, the Jersey Stakes in track record time at three, the Westchester Handicap at four and the Brooklyn Handicap and Golden Gate Handicap at five. Palestinian earned 93,525 in four seasons and 44 starts and a near classic ranking despite being hampered by tendon trouble throughout his career.
